Oh boy, so Google might—big emphasis on “might” here—be prepping to drop some fancy glasses at their Google I/O bash next week. Like, they’re supposedly gunning for those Ray-Ban Meta specs. I saw it in this promo thingy. Sameer Samat, the Android Ecosystem Prez, was prancing around with what looked like smart glasses.
Samat? Didn’t spill much about them though. Just put them on and teased that folks at the event would spy some “really cool Android demos.” Whatever that means, right?
The glasses, from my half-cross-eyed YouTube pausing technique, look kinda like those Ray-Ban Wayfarers. There’s this lone camera bit on the left side—like a cyclops, I guess?
Plus, there’s an LED bit too, over that camera lens. Maybe it blinks when you’re snapping selfies or something? Sure, they could be aiming for a matchup with those Ray-Ban gadgets.
These glasses sport some seriously beefy arms. I bet they’re hiding some sort of magic tech—batteries, processors—whatever it takes to run this Android XR mumbo jumbo Samat hinted at. Oh, also, there’s a teeny slit under the left arm next to Samat’s ear. Could be for tunes—or maybe it’s a button. Who knows, really?
Meanwhile, Apple’s not just sitting around. Apparently, they’re on the move with their own glass gadgets—got a special chip they’re cooking up, or so Bloomberg whispers.
Anyway—wait, where was I? Oh yeah! Google I/O. It’s going down on May 20-21 and there’s gonna be all this jazz: live streams, talks… you know, tech fest stuff. We might hear the deets about Android XR there. Fingers crossed, right?
I’m definitely gonna check in, but you could also catch the keynote live on YouTube on Tuesday, May 20th, at like 10 AM PT. If you’re into that sort of thing.
Here’s that moment for ya:
