Alright, so picture this: a whole bunch of VR shooters trying to be like that old gem from Valve, Counter-Strike. You remember that one, right? Anyway, here comes this mod group called Team Beef. They’re like, “Why settle for imitations when you can have the real thing?” And boom, they’re bringing it to Quest and Pico headsets. Wild, right?
Now, Team Beef isn’t new to this game. They’ve already tossed classics like Tomb Raider and Duke Nukem 3D into the VR world. Like, when did Duke Nukem even come out? I feel old. But I digress—Counter-Strike 1.6 is their next big project. That’s the version we all played after school, trying to sneak in a couple of rounds before homework.
So, how are they doing it? They’re using this thing called the Xash3D FWGS engine. I’m not gonna lie—half of these tech terms fly right over my head. But it basically makes the old engine from Half-Life work in VR. Plus, there’s this Velaron client thing that helps out too. Tech magic!
They’re promising cross-play and, get this, easy server creation inside VR. It’s like, “Why bother fiddling with a million settings?” Just plop your headset on and go. They’re also working on 6DoF, which I think means you can flail your arms around while playing. You know, real immersive stuff.
The juicy part? It’s dropping in early access pretty soon for the folks supporting Team Beef on Patreon. They even teased a prototype. I watched it, kind of expecting to see all this fancy hand movement, but not yet. Still, it’s a taste of what’s to come, I guess. What’s the rush anyway? It’s already been like 20 years since we first booted up CS, right?
So there you have it. Counter-Strike’s coming to VR. Finally. Weirdly exciting, isn’t it?
