The CES event promises to be a hotspot of technological advances, with consumers eagerly anticipating the unveiling of a new HDMI standard to supersede the prevalent HDMI 2.1 ports. According to a report from ComputerBase, the HDMI Licensing Administrator plans to introduce breakthrough technology at the event. While they haven’t explicitly named it, there’s a strong belief that “HDMI 2.2” is on the horizon, offering improved bandwidth, enhanced resolution support, and faster refresh rates.
The HDMI Forum is gearing up to announce an updated HDMI specification. This upgrade will pioneer next-gen HDMI technology, providing increased bandwidth to support a wider range of resolutions and refresh rates. An upgraded HDMI cable will be needed to handle these enhancements. These innovations are set to significantly benefit content creators across various mediums—including television, films, and gaming—while also expanding options across multiple distribution platforms.
Despite the buzz, HDMI LA’s announcement hasn’t been explicit about the new naming convention for HDMI. This leaves room for speculation. Could it simply be an upgrade to the existing HDMI 2.1 standard? Given previous patterns, an outright new standard introduction seems more likely.

While the official announcement of HDMI 2.2 might increase the likelihood of its support in new GPUs, there’s no guarantee just yet, as concrete information remains elusive.
