Oh, so here’s some news I stumbled upon, and I promise it’s not just another drab announcement. Codemasters just hit the brakes on making more World Rally Championship games. Yeah, they’re done, at least for now. I mean, they’ve been at it with stuff like EA Sports WRC, DiRT Rally, and its sequel for ages, and honestly, I kinda felt like the tires were wearing thin.
So, they wrapped up the Hard Chargers content pack – honestly, never tried it, maybe you did? – and now, they’re like, “Alright folks, that’s a wrap.” The way they said it was something about every journey having a finish line. Sounds poetic, right? But also kinda like they’re moving on to something else. Or maybe they’re just tired? Or maybe it’s the result of EA swinging the job-cutting axe – heard rumors about 300 or 400 folks getting the boot.
Anyway, maybe they’ve had enough of the whole rally scene after, what, 40 years? That’s like ancient history. They kicked off with some game for the ZX Spectrum. I wasn’t even around, but folks say Colin McRae Rally in ’98 was the jam. Over 3 million copies? That’s a lot of gamers. Makes you think, doesn’t it?
And, get this, they jumped on the VR bandwagon early. DiRT Rally VR in 2016? People were raving about it, calling it the VR racing benchmark. But what now? Who knows if they’ll keep updating VR stuff for their new games. F1 25 is still a go for PC VR, though, if you’re into that.
Not lots of options for VR rally driving these days. Could be that some new racing game magic is brewing. Maybe someone’s toiling away in a garage-turned-studio to surprise us. I’d love to think so. Who doesn’t love a good comeback or an unexpected plot twist? Keep your eyes peeled, right?
Anyway, this is the scoop. Let’s see where the winding road takes us next.
