US publishing giant Electronic Arts is finally pulling the plug on Anthem next year. Yeah, I know. Surprised it took so long? In a blog post somewhere on their site, they casually mentioned it’s all going down on January 12th, 2026. You’ve got until then to spend any of that shiny in-game currency you couldn’t resist buying. No more sales, though. Weirdly, it’s like they suddenly remembered the game was still around.
EA expressed their heartfelt thanks, something along the lines of, “We deeply appreciate your dedication, passion and support over the years and we’d like to thank you for that.” There you have it, straight from the horse’s mouth. And, apparently, shutting down Anthem doesn’t mean everyone’s out of a job. At least for now. No clue if they’re just tiptoeing around potential layoffs later.
Anthem was supposed to be BioWare and EA’s grand entrance into the world of live-service games. Launched in early 2019, it kind of fizzled out instead. Somehow the whole development was a bit of a mess—who’d have thought? Not long after, BioWare promised some major improvements. Even started revamping the entire game, calling it Anthem Next or something. But, nope, that didn’t see the light of day.
And here we are, left wondering what could’ve been. Or not.
