So here’s this thing: 2021’s Lost in Random — not a roguelike, mind you — but the developers, they always had this inkling, you know? Like, "Hey, our wacky world could totally rock that fast, combat-heavy vibe." Just kinda felt right.
Then there’s Martin Storm. Director dude of Lost in Random: The Eternal Die — which is a roguelike, by the way — chatting away in a video call with Polygon. He went on about how bringing the roguelike twist to the IP just, you know, clicked. Weird, right? But that’s the start.
Now you’ve got The Eternal Die, a spin-off. Think Queen Aleksandra — the so-called baddie from the original — as the star. She’s got these ever-twisting levels to deal with. And she’s got Fortune, this die that’s, um, sentient. Trapped by some crazily powerful artifact and trying to break free. Really scratching my head here, but it works.
“Oh, the randomness and dice thing goes so well with a roguelite," Storm says. They started small, tiny team — and their marching orders? Bam, mix Lost in Random with more combat, more gameplay.
Even, the original main character, she had an exploring vibe. Take your time, smell the roses in the Kingdom of Random. But The Eternal Die? Nope. Fast pace, no snoozing. It’s kinda like Hades with hectic battles, and those story bits tucked between bosses. Storm openly admits, “Hades inspired us big time. No kidding.”
This brainchild comes from Stormteller Games. Different tag from the original, yeah, but half of them used to be in the same boat — the original crew members. So you bet it retains that quirky, oddball spirit. As Storm notes, those guys just get it.
What’s next? Storm’s mum on specifics — keeping it mysterious. But he’s letting slip they’re going to spice up The Eternal Die at some point. “More goodies for The Eternal Die… when? Who knows. But it’s coming.”
