Nintendo has officially announced that pre-orders for the highly anticipated Switch 2 will open in the United States starting April 24. While maintaining the current pricing, the standalone system will retail at $449.99, and a bundled package featuring Mario Kart World will be available for $499.99.
Initially planned for an earlier release, U.S. pre-orders faced a brief delay. This pause gave Nintendo time to evaluate how potential tariffs and changing market conditions might affect their strategies. As for accessories, gamers will notice a slight increase in costs. The Joy-Con 2 controllers are now priced at $94.99, up from $89.99, and the Pro Controller has risen from $79.99 to $84.99. Other peripherals like the Switch 2 camera, dock set, wheel set, and charging grips have also seen price hikes.
Nintendo left room for the possibility of future price changes due to shifting market dynamics, according to their recent announcement. However, the Switch 2 is still on track for its June 5 launch.
The original plan was to start pre-orders on April 9, but circumstances changed when President Donald Trump revealed a broad series of tariffs on the same day, leading to a 90-day hold on many tariffs except those affecting Chinese goods.
On the software front, Mario Kart World and the upcoming Donkey Kong Banaza, set for release on July 17, will retain their current price points, at $79.99 and $69.99 respectively.
The Switch 2 brings several enhancements compared to the original model, boasting a larger HDR-capable screen, an additional USB Type-C port, and an upgraded Nvidia graphics chip.
Priced at $449.99, the Switch 2 comes in significantly higher than the original Switch, which launched at $299.99. This has prompted some fans to voice their desire for a price reduction in online discussions.
In light of the pre-order delays, Nintendo has issued an apology, expressing hope that this will ease any uncertainties their customers might be feeling.
